Garachico
Garachico is one of Tenerife’s most charming towns, a small coastal gem on the island’s north-west coast where history, the ocean and volcanic landscapes meet.
In the 16th and 17th centuries Garachico was Tenerife’s busiest port, shipping wine and sugar to Europe and the Americas. In 1706 an eruption from a volcano in the Teide range sent lava flowing down to the sea, burying the harbour and much of the town. The traces are still visible today: the town stands on the lava flow, and from the viewpoints above you can clearly see how the dark lava reshaped the coastline.
The same lava created Garachico’s most famous attraction: the El Caletón natural pools. These calm, crystal-clear rock pools, connected by walkways and steps, are perfect for a swim with sweeping views of the Atlantic and the Roque de Garachico islet.
Behind the seafront lies a beautifully preserved old town of cobbled streets, colourful colonial houses and quiet squares such as Plaza de la Libertad. Explore the Castillo de San Miguel, the Puerta de Tierra gardens and the Church of Santa Ana, then browse the local craft shops and enjoy fresh fish and Canarian dishes in the town’s cosy restaurants and cafés.
Tip: visit the pools on a calm day – when the sea is rough, swimming is not allowed.
