Puerto de la Cruz’s Botanical Garden (Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava) was founded in 1788, originally to acclimatise tropical plants to mainland Spain’s climate before shipping them onward. Though only a few hectares in size, the densely planted grounds hold thousands of tropical and subtropical species, including huge fig trees, orchids and palms gathered from around the world. Its most photographed feature is a massive, gnarled Ficus macrophylla with sprawling aerial roots and a canopy that shades much of the garden. The paths are well maintained and shaded, making it a pleasant visit even in the height of summer, and easy to navigate with children or older visitors. The entrance sits just a short walk from the beach and the town centre, so it pairs naturally with a stroll along the seafront or a visit to Playa Jardín. It’s an ideal outing for nature lovers and families alike, comfortably explored in an hour or two.
